COP16 Colombia Must Focus on Animal Agriculture

Stop Financing Factory Farming
21st October '24

At the upcoming COP16 biodiversity summit in Colombia, world leaders have a chance to address the biodiversity crisis by shifting financial support towards sustainable food production. A recent article in Common Dreams highlights the urgent need to focus on animal agriculture, the largest driver of deforestation and biodiversity loss, covering 80% of agricultural land while providing just 17% of global calories. Despite pledges made through the Global Biodiversity Framework and commitments from multilateral development banks (MDBs), factory farming continues to receive significant financial backing.

The article argues that MDBs must align their financial flows with biodiversity goals, halting further support for factory farms and promoting plant-rich diets and agroecological principles.

The industrial animal livestock sector is by far the largest driver of biodiversity loss, and must be where attendees at COP16 focus their attention.
