Partner Letter to AIIB and ADB: Bangladesh (May 2024)

Stop Financing Factory Farming
5th September '24

In May 2024, our partners at Compassion in World Animal Farming and International Accountability Project expressed concerns about the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) support for Bangladesh’s Climate Resilient Inclusive Development Program. This program includes measures to replace low-producing cattle with high-producing crossbred varieties, raising issues related to animal welfare and industrial animal agriculture expansion.

Among the arguments, there is a strong risk that high-yielding cattle like Holsteins could exacerbate feed import dependence, leading to deforestation and biodiversity loss in Brazil where they originate. These environmental impacts contradict global climate agreements and could undermine Bangladesh’s climate objectives.

AIIB and ADB were urged to reconsider their support to prevent indirect funding of harmful industrial livestock practices and to review policies to align with sustainable and welfare-friendly practices.
