Letter to EBRD: Food Union Europe (July 2024)
Stop Financing Factory Farming
18th November '24
In May 2024, S3F partners including Compassion in World Farming, Sinergia Animal, and World Animal Protection International wrote to IFC staff to stop the development bank from loaning 25 million dollars to Food Union Europe, an international dairy distributor.
The letter questions whether Food Union Europe, a luxury product company with €290 million in annual revenue, should qualify for a €25 million loan. It raises concerns about how the loan aligns with EBRD’s goals on inclusion, food security, and climate action, urging stronger supply chain checks to ensure compliance with EU animal welfare standards.
The authors also point out the high greenhouse gas emissions tied to industrial dairy production, which clash with EBRD’s climate commitments. They recommend extending due diligence and reconsidering the loan due to its risks to animal welfare and the environment.
