Partner Letter to IDB: Empresias Aritzia (April 2022)

In April 2022 our partners in animal welfare wrote to IDB Invest to raise concerns about their proposed $50 million loan for expanding Empresas Ariztía’s poultry production in Chile.
They were concerned that this project could lead to severe environmental and social issues such as worsening climate change, contributing to deforestation, and deepening Chile’s water crisis. Empresas Ariztía also has a questionable history that includes a past collusion scandal impacting food security in Chile.
In sum, the proposed financing contradicts IDB Invest’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement.
