Partner Letter to IFC: Innovafeed, SE Asia (Nov 2022)
Stop Financing Factory Farming
5th September '24
In November 2022, S3F partners reached out to the IFC about their support for InnovaFeed’s insect feed plant in Indonesia and Malaysia. Citing academic research on animal feed resource use, they caution that the project could inadvertently support the unsustainable industrial livestock sector, conflicting with the SDGs and Paris Climate Agreement– especially SDG 2 on ending hunger and improving food security.
Their concerns focus on the high energy use of insect protein production, the inefficiency of using feed that could otherwise benefit people or other animals, and risks like potential invasiveness and health hazards associated with insect farming.
The IFC’s disclosures for this Category A project lack crucial details for assessment, prompting doubts about their adherence to Performance Standards and consideration of broader impacts.
