The campaign’s pressure on the World Bank was highlighted in an Observer article published today.
Friends of the Earth US, CIWF and other groups will be signing a letter to Ajay Banga, the World Bank’s president, for the bank’s spring meeting later this month. It will say the organisation must acknowledge that industrial farming is a “major contributor to the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss” and phase out the funding.
From the article, “World Bank’s funding of ‘hog hotel’ factory farms under fire over climate effect“
The article highlights numerous harmful industrial animal agriculture projects supported by the World Bank Group through its private sector arm, the IFC (International Finance Corporation), in 2022 and 2023. This includes multi-storey “hog hotel” company GXYX. In May 2023, members of the Stop Financing Factory Farming coalition urged IFC not to invest in GXYX given inadequate evidence of animal welfare and sustainability standards – read the letter here.
